The year 1972 has certainly marked the destiny of Audemars Piguet. This year, the brilliant designer Gerald Genta signed the masterful design of the Royal Oak, inspired by the Royal Navy warships and scuba divers. A unique and undeniable character emerges from this iconic model.

How strange must have been the opinion at the time, a tonneau-shaped case which is fitted with an octagonal bezel held in place by visible screws, that is unusual. An extraordinary watchmaking legend was born. Just look at the current models, it is difficult to differentiate them from the original 1972 model, the first design was the right one.

The model presented here is a Royal Oak A-series from 1970’s, in stainless steel, the most sought-after by collectors, the very first, the rarest.

The case measures 39 mm in diameter, a so-called “jumbo” opening, very large for the time, it is the first classic sports watch in the history of fine watchmaking.

The dial is finely guilloché with “little tapestry” motifs of remarkable elegance.

Discreet date window at 3, and the stainless steel integrated bracelet is very comfortable and fits perfectly with the design of the watch.

Self-winding mechanical movement.
