When we talk about the history of a brand or a watch, we most often refer to a significant event, to an anecdote that has contributed to make the timepiece going down in history. This is even more true for Rolex, which has been able to put each of its watches in the spotlight by associating them with historical events.

The Rolex Explorer I took part in one of the greatest human adventures in 1953, when Sir Edmund Hillary and sherpa Tenzing Norgay became the first mountaineers to climb the summit of Everest.

At the time, the Nepalese government only allowed one expedition per year to the world’s highest peak and this year a Rolex watch sponsored the event.

The model of Rolex presented here is an Explorer I, the reference 1016 from 1964. It is a stainless steel round case of 36 mm diameter. Magnificent black lacquered dial of the most beautiful effect with painted indexes 3,6,9 specific to all the Explorer models. Mercedes hands and central second hand. Self-winding mechanical movement, chronometer certified, calibre 1570.

This legendary watch forms an integral part of the Rolex heritage.

An extraordinary history that accompanies the model and propels it into the field of collecting.
