At post-war period, Hans Wilsdorf proposes the Air-King to honour the courage of the Royal Air Force pilots. A watch that pilots particularly appreciated for its precision and reliability.
The first references propose a 6-hour second hand and a manual-winding mechanical movement.
The launch of the reference 5500 changes the model by offering the central second hand and the self-winding mechanical movement.
Rolex manufactures Air-King models for some major companies such as the «Winn Dixie». It is one of the large supermarket chains in the United States. Founded in 1914, with a turnover of approximately 7.5 billion dollars in 1997. Winn Dixie has 521 stores in Florida, Alabama, Louisiana, Georgia and Mississippi.
These Air-King watches were offered to their truck drivers as recognition for 10 years of safe driving.
The model presented here is from 1981. It is a stainless steel round case of 34 mm diameter, screwed crown and case back. Silver dial with stick applied markers and Winn Dixie logo at 6. Self-winding mechanical movement.
This rare Rolex model expresses Hans Wilsdorf’s passion for making cult watches that today find a place of choice in the world of vintage timepieces.
A model not to be missed if you are willing to acquire an unusual and emblematic object.
