One of Rolex’s first major clients is undoubtedly the “PAN AMERICAN”, one of the world’s largest airlines.
It is in 1954 that Rolex conceives the GMT-Master. Thanks to an additional hand and a 24-hour graduated blue and red bidirectional bezel, it allows an instantaneous reading of a second time zone. Here comes the pilot’s watch.
A watchmaking complication essential to the advent of long-haul flights. The essential tool for travellers.
Its most striking version is undoubtedly the reference 1675. It was created in 1959, it will last 31 years in the Rolex catalogue, a record for a reference of the brand. The proposed model dates from 1978.
A round stainless steel case of 40 mm diameter, on a stainless steel Oyster bracelet. A matte black dial with painted indexes, Mercedes hands for the hours and minutes, a red arrow hand for the indication of a second time zone and the date with a magnifying lens at 3. A 24-hour graduated blue and red “Pepsi” bidirectional bezel and a Plexiglas glass.
It is a self-winding mechanical movement, calibre 1575.
A particular reference that I personally love. A unique and authentic watch. A useful complication for a sports watch. Indispensable in a vintage collection, especially as it is an iconic Rolex created for adventurers and globetrotters.
