The Rolex Sea-Dweller differs from its predecessor, the Submariner, by the thickness of the case and a gas escape valve that allows helium gas to escape during decompression. One of the important differences is the water-resistance which displays 1220 m on the reference 16600, which will be manufactured from 1990 to 2009, then it will be replaced by the Deep Sea. The date is displayed in a window at 3, but with a sapphire glass without cyclops which is different from the Submariner, a pleasant detail that makes the difference.
The round stainless steel case measures 40 mm in diameter with a 60 mn epoxy bezel to measure dive times or decompression stops. The black dial with luminescent round indexes with Mercedes hands and central seconds hand, ensure a perfect reading in diving conditions. Self-winding mechanical movement, chronometer certified, therefore better finished and more precise.
The model presented here is from 2000, a model already very sought-after and collector’s item.
A reference watch in terms of diving, the 16600 will remain an unequalled tool for experienced explorers.
