Under the initiative of André Heiniger, a partnership was formed between Rolex and Comex (Compagnie Maritime d’Expertise). Divers were allocated a watch with a Rolex stamp for their missions. This was the beginning of a long collaboration…
This fruitful association inspired Rolex to develop a mythical innovation: the helium valve. Numerous tests were carried out in the Comex hyperbaric chamber to improve it, right up to the current version.
In order to differentiate Comex watches from those intended for the general public, the first models, notably the 5514, have only a very discreet marking on the case back, the mythical marking on the dial will follow shortly afterwards.
This Rolex model is the reference 16610 from 1997. It is a round stainless steel case of 40 mm diameter with screwed crown and case back. Black dial with round circled index with Comex logo in a white rectangle. Mercedes hands and central second hand. Date window at 3. Self-winding mechanical movement. With its original box and papers.
This model is one of the most sought-after pieces by collectors and lovers of iconic watches.
A real tool for professional divers reserved for an elite who will use these watches during their high-risk missions.
