Pan American World Airways, “PAN AM”, one of the largest airlines founded in 1926, could have been one of Rolex’s first major customers. That’s why, in 1954, probably at PAN AM’s request, Rolex designed a new pilot’s wristwatch: the GMT MASTER. Slimmer, it featured an additional hand and a bi-directional bezel (blue and red), allowing instant reading of a second time zone. An essential watchmaking complication for the advent of long-haul flights.
Ref. 6542 was the first model produced, followed by Ref. 1675, like the model we’re presenting here.
This is the last year of production, with a “lacquered” dial and the inscription Swiss – T <25.
