In 1905, Hans Wilsdorf and his brother-in-law Alfred Davis opened a watch company in London called Wisdorf & Davis. At that time, the majority of supplies came from Switzerland. From the beginning of the adventure, Rolex seized the luxury niche by offering robust, reliable and aesthetically pleasing models. A particular model was born, the bombay model, a unique model produced in the 1940s, then available under the reference 5016 (second indicated on a register) and 5018 (center second indication), in 14 or 18k solid gold. It is a watch with specific and stylized lugs, whose rounded profile initially gave it the name of “bombé” (domed), which later became “bombay”.
The model presented here, is a beautiful and rare bombay around 1950. It is a round case in yellow solid gold, 34 mm diameter, with screwed crown and case back. Cream dial with applied stick indexes. Dauphine hands and central second hand. Self-winding mechanical movement certified chronometer, a guarantee of excellent precision.
This mythical model, much sought-after by collectors, sets apart in the Rolex collection. A remarkable aesthetics which makes it a watch to be collected in priority.
