Called “Sub America”, the reference 1680 red writing was often sold in Northern America between 1969 and 1977. The white writing appeared in 1974 until 1980, and then comes the transition model : the reference 16800 with the replacement of plexiglas glass by sapphire crystal.
The Submariner meets the extreme requirements of divers: legibility, water-resistance and robustness. These 3 criteria are met in this mythical model.
This model has a black dial with tritium painted indexes and luminescent Mercedes hands (specific to the brand’s sports models) that provide visibility. The 40 mm Oyster stainless steel round case with screwed crown and case back, provides water-resistance to 200 m (660 ft). It adopts a flat acrylic glass known as “chimney glass” with a slight projection of 3 mm on the case. A magnifying lens facilitates the reading of the date. A 60 mn graduated epoxy rotating bezel allows divers to measure their immersion time, a rather useful and even vital function for these frogmen.
The Submariner is considered to be the diver’s watch par excellence, an iconic Rolex model that has been manufactured continuously since the early 1950s, always respecting the same impeccable manufacturing criteria.
It is not necessary to be a professional diver to wear this timeless and sporty watch.
Tropical dial Mark III.
