The lineage of the Rolex Submariner is as winding as the family tree of the kings of France. A large number of branches, great physical similarities but subtleties, a great deal of power and a large dose of mystery. As always when talking about great families, it’s important to look back at previous generations to get an idea of what’s new and what’s evolved.

The 1680 Submariner will succeed the 5513. While the Rolex 5513 saw its production period extend from 1962 to 1989, the first 1680s appeared in 1969, and production continued until 1979. Reference 1680 introduced a major novelty: it was the first Submariner with a date. It was also the first Submariner with a date display, and the first to feature the famous cyclops, making it easier to read the date.

The model on offer is a luxurious 1972 1680 in perfect condition. It’s a round yellow gold case, 40 mm in diameter, with screw-down crown and caseback. Black dial with date window at 3 o’clock. 60-minute graduated bezel for calculating dive and decompression times.

This iconic marvel is a must-have in any diving watch collection.
